Our Hospital’s lead role in genetics research was covered in the prestigious Lancet  Medical Journal this week. Prof. Ephrat Levy-Lahad co-authored an article which highlights cutting edge research that will hopefully help to save many lives sadly lost to genetic conditions.

The article highlighted how different populations within Israel, including Jewish, Arab, Bedouin, Christian and Druze have all benefited from the offer of population testing for genetic diseases. More than 40 years of testing for Tay Sachs, for example, has effectively eliminated the disease in Israel.

The article also highlight Prof Levy-Lahad’s work in recommending population screening for genetic mutations including the BRCA 1/2 gene which is carried in one per 40 Ashkenazi Jews. To read more about her work please click here
