Our doctors perform miracles on a daily basis and we are sure you will agree that this story is a perfect example of just that.
Norila Montemire, is a 46 year old nursing assistant from the Philippines who has lived in Israel for 20 years. After suffering from persistent headaches over a few days she suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Shaare Zedek Medical Centre unconscious, in a life threatening situation.
After undergoing extensive tests it was discovered that Norila was suffering from a brain haemorrhage. She underwent a brain catherterization by Dr Yaakov Amsalem and further brain surgery by Dr Chazon in the department of Neurosurgery, however neither of these procedures fixed the problem and her condition continued to deteriorate.
Dr Mausbach director of the neurosurgical intensive care unit started a unique treatment to help Norila, which involved cooling her body to 33 degrees. This type of treatment is currently being used in a research framework in several hospitals in Germany. It is believed that the cooling helps lower metabolic activity in the brain, lowers oxygen consumption and allows the brain to recover.
For eight days whilst under close observation, Norila’s body was cooled to a temperature of 33 degrees using pads which were attached to her chest and thighs and contained a gel through which cold water flowed.
Dr. Mausbach shares – “Wthin a few hours, the pressure dropped and the bleeding was significantly reduced, and after a significant improvement, we started the heating process. Norila’s life was saved thanks to the innovative treatment,”
An incredible story – we wish Norila all the very best as she continues her recovery.
