As we approach Chanukah, I find myself reflecting on the miracles in my life, especially the one that unfolded at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in 2016.
Just before Pesach, during a visit to Jerusalem, I fell gravely ill. I was too weak to join my family for the Friday evening meal. My brother David insisted on taking me to a local clinic the next morning and after seeing the severity of my symptoms, the doctor who examined me insisted we go straight to Shaare Zedek’s Emergency Room.
I felt overwhelmed and afraid, unaware of just how close I was to losing everything.
In a stroke of fate, the ER team included a young doctor from the exact department needed. Incredibly he recognised the rare and dangerous condition I was suffering from, necrotizing fasciitis, a rapid, flesh – destroying infection. Without his swift diagnosis and immediate action, I wouldn’t be here today to tell this story.
That same day, I underwent two emergency surgeries that saved my life, followed by multiple reconstructive surgeries that helped restore my health.
For five weeks, Shaare Zedek’s staff treated me with unparalleled care and expertise. My wife Adele and I witnessed their compassion firsthand, and it gave me the strength to keep fighting.
I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to Shaare Zedek for giving me the chance to celebrate life. Please consider supporting this remarkable hospital which means to much to me and so many others, offering hope for those in urgent need.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Martin Brownstein
